Camouflage

Camouflage

Camouflage is a method of hiding. It allows an otherwise visible organism or object to remain unnoticed, by blending with its environment. Examples include a tiger's stripes, the battledress of a modern soldier and a butterfly camouflaging itself as a leaf.

We all have our camouflage. We are all hiding from something.

Here's mine....can you see me?

"The most ancient and still most common image of a school is as a moral community, a temple of learning.. In our pluralistic society this image captures, for many, the breadth and depth of consensus, hard to find in the multiple and shifting associations of our daily lives. As a temple, the school's primary function is nurturing and formative. The principal is the moral leader, a high priest. Teachers are clergy. Students are novices being inducted into the order. What is studied is good; what is ignored is ignoble. What the teacher or principal tells you, you do. The rules of the school are sacrosanct; authority is unquestioned. Success is acceptance as a properly educated person; a kind of character formation. Infractions are moral evils, a kind of sin.
What is important is not coming up with some general characterization about schools, but understanding schooling. How can we understand what goes on in and about schools.? What gives us a handle on dealing with the complexities of schooling? These are the important questions and their answers are the tools we are searching for."
Rewritten from parts of Chapter 2 in Gary K. Clabaugh & Edward G. Rozycki
Understanding Schools: the foundations of education Harper & Row 1990.

"Studying all of a school at once is virtually impossible. One inevitably looks at pieces and then seeks to put them together. The results are neither fully satisfying nor completely accurate. They are an approximation of reality."
--- John Goodlad, A Place Called School

Accent College Schiedam

The Image

In prior years, the image of Accent College in Schiedam hadn't been a very positive one. The past years there were wreaked with dissatisfaction on the launched modernizing education, from which , bad experiences from parents about the attention and care for the students came to surface. Aside from the location, Nolenslaan had had a negative aura that pervaded into the public minds, due to fights in the schoolyard, the shabby fence around the school and the dilapidated school building in a disadvantaged urban area.

100 day project

The goal of the 100 Day Project was to turn Accent College, into a school, to which, one would like to attend. A school where one doesn't only get their degree but also the opportunity to broaden their experience of learning. What is not offered anywhere else, at this time, is offered here. Het Stormt, with her personal call of duty , took initiative to do something . A school in underprivileged urban area that has a good chance to get back on it's feet, was realized by making the school 'the nicest and most amusing school' of Schiedam, in within 100 days.

Catwalk Project
MarieL Vieira went above and beyond her call of duty. She enthusiastically participated in this project which would inevitably utilize her skills as a creative producer, to share her interests and knowledge of fashion and creativity with the students and to show that an alternative and practical course of study, such as fashion, can be well received in a school for young teens. Within a one week period, she organized a kind of seminar in the school, where the students produced and designed tee-shirts in a workshop several weeks before, organized a street casting (in the school), prepared a runway show, designed invitations, and modelled and styled their tee's themselves in a fashion shoot. Styling and styling techniques were provided and guided by Daisy Kroon, a Fashion Designer and well known stylist, based in Rotterdam. Hair & make-up was done by the students themselves under counseling and support of ("ex" hair & make-up artist) Photographer Bobby Collins (NY), based in Brussels.

The Photoshoot

Bobby had met MarieL in Paris, during Fashion Week, in February 2007, at a presentation she was producing for the Fashion Institute Arnhem, through a colleague. There, he was taking photos of the event and had chatted briefly with her, during a lull, about somehow working together in the future. They exchanged cards and kept each other on file. As time went on, both Bobby and MarieL had been busy with other things, but then, yet again, another event and colleague brought them to the same place this year in June. This time, however, neither of them was working at this gathering, so they had the chance to talk about their latest projects. MarieL went on to explain the 100 Day Project . It was interesting to Bobby, firstly, because aside from the editorials and small projects with designers, he has been working with new model talent for the past couple of years, scouting and developing their portfolios for agencies in the Untied States as well as in Europe. He found this project to have a familiarity to what he has been doing with new talents, thus, suggested that this aspect be included in her curriculum, so to speak. A couple of weeks later, she asked him to take part in her project. And Secondly, close to ten years ago, he based himself in Amst

Tax Day Protest Photos - from Paul Darby (grokker on huffpo) in Baton Rouge Louisiana

this was a fun assignment. the baton rouge protest seemed to have a rather
impressive turnout, i'd estimate low 4 figures. anyway here are the photo
descriptions:

1817 - entering capitol park
1864 - a wide shot of the protesters from the park
1900 - a sign that seems to be mocking how often obama says "uh"
1903 - a shot of several signholders on the steps of the state capitol, with
one above all saying "vote liberals out"
1913 - this sign helpfully explains that TEA stands for Taxed Enough Already
1939 - a bunch of signs from the back still
1957 - sign reads: "bankers: go to jail. do not pass go. do not collect
$200,000,000"
1965 - sign reads "socialism is not an american value"
1969 - a moderately cryptic-looking sign that simply reads "who is john
galt". not the first or last atlas shrugged reference
1975 - liberty does not equal socialism
1979 - a four-panelled sign with various slogans
1986 - one of my favorite signs reads, "warning i'm a bitter christian
clinging to my gun"
1999 - sign reads: "if i quit my job, will i make more money?"
2004 - sign reads: "i voted for palin. i'm a right-wing extremist"
2009 - wider shot of the sign in 2004, with sign-holder
2022 - young man holds sign reading "just another right-wing extremist"
2034 - some hold-outs from mardi gras hold signs, one which says "throw me
something pelosi!"
2057 - sign reads "4 trillion debt, 9000 socialist earmarks stop!"
2058 - a Baton Rouge Tea Party sign with teabags hanging on it
2068 - sign reads "i love big oil, quit taxing it!"
2073 - dapper gentlemen holds sign reading "god save our nation!"

radicals"

2133 - the first sign that finally indicates that maybe there are SOME
non-republicans here
2147 - sign reads: "common sense, not common cents"
2148 - sign reads "stop out of control spending" with a dollar being flushed
down a toilet
2177 - a wide shot of some signholders, this time from closer to the front
of the action
2181 - a little girl's sign reads "dont steal my future!"
2184 - a trio of signs, including one that has obama in a green felt cap and
the slogan "robbin' hood"
2204 - a single hand waving a small american flag reaching up above the
chaos
2224 - sign reads "the constitution is not an instrument of blah blah blah,"
you read it.

his mortgage" it should be noted that there is no one stage right. photo
2333 shows this irony a bit better.
2231 - an anti-acorn sign
2264 - a little girl holds a sign reading "you are not entitled to what my
daddy has earned"
2303 - a wide shot of the crowd at its peak, and from near the front
2313 - a little girl, sister of the one from 2264, holds a sign saying "my
daddy wanted to be here but he's at work!"
2324 - yet another sign from these girls reads "my daddy works hard for his
money, let him keep it!"
2333 - wide shot of the lady holding the "i'm with stupid" sign from 2225

didn't ask.
2415 - the little girl holds up the flip side of the previous sign, which
has just an american flag on it.
2438 - a sign that seems to suggest that obama, like Mr. T, just wanted to
take our pocket change.
2457 - a sign asking whether you'd prefer to drink tea or kool-aid
2497 - another wide shot of the cheering crowd, just before the end of the
last speaker
2516 - a little girl with a sign reading "10 years old and already $30,000
in debt!"
2538 - the same little girl and her mother booing something the speaker said
2555 - sign reads "obamanomics: chains we can believe in"
2575 - young woman holds sign reading "Oh Crap!" with the O in the obama
style.

weighty message
2625 - sign reads "higher taxes so other can sit on their [insert democrat
donkey]"
2635 - another trio of signs, including one that reads "we the people are
now owned by the chinese"
2693 - wide shot of the crowd slowly starting to disperse
2711 - a better shot of the little girl with the "my daddy wanted to be
here" sign
2739 - a little boy holds up a sign reading "socialism is coming!"
2774 - a little girl holding two signs
2783 - the same girl, dressed as an indian, with two signs
2793 - an empty baby stroller with signs piled all over it
2811 - the same baby stroller, with the family carrying signs and loading a
little girl into the stroller
2816 - a l
